263. Boma Watchman Pawn Chesspiece

Part of a chess set designed by Christian M. White in 1997, the Watchman represents the pawn.

Figure is seated and shown wearing the tall hat as befits his status. 6cm high, black resin. The complete set comprises of 16 black figures and 16 white. See also Rook Bear and Raven Queen No. 11 and No 169

 

262. Black Boma Trinket Box

Faux Argillite trinket box, made from black resin. 5.5 cm high and similar diameter.

Exterior depicts a complex intertwined story involving Raven, Bear, Whale, Thunderbird, Sea Wolf and Man.

Lid is decorated by a Sea Wolf or Sea Minster motif. Marked Boma on side and labelled below.

261. Pewter Raven with Bear and Salmon

Fine art pewter sculpture of Raven atop a bear, catching salmon. Possibly fish or whale motif in between. Base has moon and two monster faces in relief.

 Rear is hollow with makers mark ‘MG’ and copyright stamp. 4” high overall.

260. HS Thunderbird With Straight Wings

6" high amber resin, made by 'H.S' company. Thunderbird with outstretched triangular wings, perches on the head of a Wolf (?) which in turn sits on a human head with lolling tongue.

Bear motif sat atop a 2.5" pewter pole with various animals. Eyes set with gemstones for effect, no visible TM

252. Iljuwas (Bill Reid) Commemorative Coins

Commemorative coin in honour of Haida artist Iluwas - Bill Reid, decorated with Xhuwaji (Grizzly Bear)

The reverse design features Xhuwaji, Haida Grizzly Bear by renowned Haida artist Iljuwas (Bill Reid) on the inner core and extending onto the outer ring. On the top portion of the outer ring, two images of a maple leaf appear within the line pattern. A banner at the bottom of the outer ring bears the inscriptions "BILL" and "REID" in honour of the 100th anniversary of the Haida artist's birth, while "2020" is centred between two security marks that consist of a maple leaf within another maple leaf. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

251. Black Resin Pole with Crab

Six inch resin reproduction, possibly Pearlite or Tahnoo. No makers mark.Human face at the top, with possible crab motif at centre. Lower half is a whale holding a halibut.

 

250. Black Nature Store Resin Totem

Unusual 7" resin piece with bear devouring salmon on top of a bird like figure with human face. Possibly Raven in mid transformation, as lower part of the face has the shape of a beak.

Rear has the remains of a large paper label, probably with a background story and a secondary label from 'Nature Store'

 Base has a recess with initials CMC-MCC  VIB B  1418

Compact Raven sculpture, 3" high, black resin with white highlights.

Similar in form to Boma Chesspiece Raven No. 169. See also 222. 161 and 160 for other Swityk of Canada pieces

248. Wooden Totem Pole

8" wooden totem, same style as 189. Missing 'Victoria' sticker from front of base. Slightly taller than 189, with some variations in carving and paint style, but same essential form. No makers marks

Possibly produced for British Columbia Centennial in 1958.
 

247. Petite Japanese Thunderbird

Tiny 2" Thunderbird made in Japan for tourist market. Possibly plastic or bone, hand painted.

 

246. Pewter Thunderbird Figure

Small white metal pewter figure of Thunderbird, with wings outstretched. Finely detailed, just under 3" high. Unknown maker - marked WS on rear

 

245. Black Diamond Wooden Raven

Wooden Raven figure from Black Diamond company. 4" high with stand, hand painted. Comes with small booklet containing Raven and Sun myth. Advertised as a 'Raven' the image seems to suggest a Thunderbird with the high 'ears', most commonly associated with the style.
 

244. Black Plaster Steer Totem

Unusual plaster or composite piece, in a fanciful design style, featuring a steer skull and a naked human figure holding fish.

Style is not based on standard first nations forms, but loosely follows a design which seems more African in origin, apart from the skull headpiece.

Vaguely similar decoration to no.212, with obscure script running around the base, echoing a number of different types of symbol. Presumably fairly modern and mass market production.

No visible trade marks and hand finished.
